Getting a BSN and activating DigiD after moving to the Netherlands

A BSN is a citizen service number. DigiD is a digital identity used to sign in to public services. They have different purposes: complete the appropriate registration first, then follow the relevant DigiD application and activation process. Longer residence: check BRP registration

If you expect to live in the Netherlands for more than four months, register as a resident with your municipality, generally within five days of arrival. Book ahead and check the local document requirements. See the government’s resident-registration guidance.

First registration assigns a BSN. If you already have one, keep it rather than applying for another. Processing time depends on the municipality and the checks needed.

Non-residents: check RNI conditions

RNI is for non-residents, including suitable short-stay situations. It is not a shortcut to choose instead of resident registration when your actual plans require BRP residence registration.

Under current general arrangements, non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals should check Breda or Venlo appointments; some students may have separate arrangements. Confirm the applicable desk and booking rules using the official RNI information.

DigiD requires activation

Resident applications generally use an activation letter sent to the registered address, with activation required within 21 days. SMS verification does not replace that letter. Follow DigiD’s activation instructions.

For an eligible application from abroad, a baliecode is used to collect an activation code; it is not itself the activation code and is normally valid for 30 days. Check designated desks or video collection abroad. You do not necessarily return to the original RNI desk.

Data synchronisation can take time. Do not assume DigiD will work minutes after registration. Keep your login details private: this website never asks for your BSN, identity documents or DigiD password.
