BSN and DigiD guide
Find the appropriate registration and digital identity activation steps.
Register for your actual residence plans
If you expect to live in the Netherlands for more than four months, register as a BRP resident with your municipality, generally within five days of arrival. Book ahead and check local requirements.
Obtain or confirm your BSN
First registration assigns a citizen service number (BSN). Keep an existing number; do not apply for a duplicate. Timing depends on the municipality and document checks.
Apply for DigiD
Use the official DigiD website or app with the required BSN and registered address. For a web application, choose your own username and password.
Activate with the letter
Resident applications usually involve a letter sent to your registered address. Activate within 21 days. SMS verification does not replace the activation letter. Follow official help if it does not arrive.
We do not collect your BSN, documents or passwords. Checked 16 September 2026. Resident registration · RNI registration · DigiD activation · Video collection abroad
